Since 2017, the partnership between the Council and the Australian Physiotherapy Association (APA), offers all overseas qualified physiotherapy candidates undertaking one of our assessment pathways, free APA Associate Membership.
It’s a very easy process for the Council’s candidates to receive this free membership, as it’s automatically included when you begin your assessment journey.
If you don’t wish to receive this free APA membership, simply opt out by indicating on the Eligibility Assessment or Equivalence of Qualification – New Program application forms that you don’t want your details forwarded to the APA for the purposes of this free membership and insurance.
One of the reasons the Council has partnered with the APA to offer this free APA membership and insurance, is that Clinical Assessment candidates must have insurance. Candidates must produce a Certificate of Currency of Professional Indemnity Insurance for a minimum of $5 million prior to the commencement of each session.
However, if you don’t need to complete a Clinical Assessment, there are a number of other valuable benefits this free APA membership offers.
The Council understands that there are many different elements to organise and prepare for as candidates transition from their country of origin to live and work in Australia. So, this free APA membership and insurance is one less thing you need to work out and pay for!
With over 29,000 members, the Australian Physiotherapy Association (APA) is the peak body representing the interests of Australian physiotherapists and their patients. They are committed to professional excellence and career success for their members, which translates into better patient outcomes and improved health conditions for all Australians. Through the APA’s National Groups, they offer advanced training and collegial support from physiotherapists working in similar areas.
To learn more about who the APA is and what they offer their Members and the profession visit their website.
If you are an overseas qualified physio candidate undertaking one of the Council’s assessment pathways, you’ll automatically be eligible to receive access to the free membership when you receive your Interim Certificate. Your contact details will be passed on to the APA who will help you complete the membership process.
Please note, this is an ‘opt out’ system, so if you do not wish to access this free membership and insurance, you will need to indicate on the Council’s ‘Eligibility Assessment’ or ‘Equivalence of Qualification – New Program’ application forms. See the Eligibility Assessment page or Equivalence of Qualification – New Program page for more information.
Under the APA member insurance program, overseas qualified physio candidates will receive professional indemnity insurance coverage for any activities directly associated with the assessment process or while practicing under the supervision of a registered physiotherapist.
APA members will receive $20 million professional indemnity, public and products liability coverage included in their membership.
The free APA Associate membership expires on 31 December of each year, so you will need to renew it with APA to continue your membership and the benefits, including insurance, that are provided through the membership.
The free APA membership is only available while you’re still completing a Council assessment pathway.
Once you receive your final certificate, then you may like to consider investing in one of the other APA membership offerings.
