International physiotherapists undertaking the Council’s assessments are eligible for a free Associate Membership with the Australian Physiotherapy Association (APA), the Australian physiotherapists’ peak body.

As a candidate with the Council, you have the opportunity to access free professional indemnity insurance, tools and resources to support your entry into the Australian healthcare sector. Through learning and professional development, access to job vacancies and a wide network of Australian physiotherapists, you can immerse yourself in the physiotherapy profession in Australia.

How does it work?

If you are an overseas qualified physiotherapy candidate undertaking one of the Council’s assessment pathways, you will automatically be eligible.

The process to receive access to APA’s free membership commences when you receive your Interim Certificate. At this stage in your assessment journey, the Council will forward your contact details, unless you opt out, to the APA who will complete the membership process.

If you do not wish to receive this free membership and insurance, simply opt out by indicating on your initial Council application form.

Renewing your membership

The APA Associate membership expires on 31 December of each year.

To renew your membership and professional indemnity insurance, you will need to renew with APA directly.

Who is the APA?

The Australian Physiotherapy Association (APA) is the peak body representing the interests of Australian physiotherapists and their patients. What if I don’t want the APA membership?

If you don’t wish to receive the free APA membership, simply opt out by indicating on your initial Eligibility application.

Why do I need professional indemnity insurance for Clinical Assessments?

Access to professional indemnity insurance is critical for those undertaking Clinical Assessments under the Standard Assessment Pathway.

You will receive $20 million professional indemnity, and public and product liability coverage included in your free APA Associate membership.

During your Clinical Assessments, you will be asked for a Certificate of Currency of Professional Indemnity Insurance for a minimum of $5 million prior to the commencement of each session.

The insurance will also cover any activities directly associated with the assessment process or while practising under the supervision of a registered physiotherapist.

What happens after I complete my assessment journey?

The free APA Associate membership is only valid while you’re undergoing an assessment pathway. Once you have completed your assessment journey with the Council, you might consider investing in one of the other APA memberships.
