The Council’s commitment to upholding the quality and safety of new entrants joining the Australian physiotherapy profession is consistently demonstrated across our work of accrediting university programs and assessing international physiotherapists.

As we constantly consider the needs of the Australian public to access good, safe and effective physiotherapy care, and review our services, we are now implementing a change to the Skills Assessment for Migration criteria effective from Monday 18th November 2024.

The key changes reflect the requirement for international physiotherapists to demonstrate they meet the Australian expectations of competency, culturally responsive to First Nations people of Australia and confidence to work as a first contact practitioner in a range of clinical settings.

The updated criteria to be eligible for the Council’s Skills Assessment for Migration can be found on our website.

Along with our partners in education and the physiotherapy profession, we believe that the high quality of the physiotherapy profession is maintained by validating that all international physiotherapists coming into Australia meet the same standards expected of Australian physiotherapy graduates.

The Council’s assessment pathways are the best way to confirm that international physiotherapists meet the entry level standards of physiotherapy here in Australia.

Successfully completing the assessment pathways provides confidence and trust with healthcare employers and Australian patients, that all international physiotherapists can provide safe, culturally respectful and effective physiotherapy treatments and services.

For those candidates who have already applied for a Skills Assessment and no longer meet the updated criteria, an automatic refund will be processed for you.

The Council remains committed to working alongside education partners and stakeholders throughout the Australian healthcare system to expand the physiotherapy workforce and meet the growing needs of communities nationwide.
