Australian Physiotherapy Council Sets Strategic Course for Future Workforce

The Australian Physiotherapy Council has unveiled a comprehensive five-year strategic plan designed to address workforce challenges, meet regulatory requirements, and respond to global competition, seeking to solidify itself as a trusted leader through to 2030.

The Council’s Board and leadership developed the refreshed strategy with a vision to be a global leader and enabler—supporting safe entry into the physiotherapy profession while strengthening the health workforce as a whole.

Chair of the Board, Associate Professor Michael Reynolds, said the strategy positions the Council to meet stakeholder expectations while ensuring long-term sustainability.

“This strategy isn’t just a roadmap—it provides clarity and focus on the Council’s critical role in the healthcare workforce,” said Associate Professor Reynolds.

“We recognise the important contributions physiotherapists make to the Australian community, and remain dedicated to facilitating the entry of highly qualified new physiotherapists, including both graduates and internationally qualified practitioners, into our profession.”

The Council’s strategy is built around five interconnected pillars, each designed to actively manage key risks and unlock opportunities:

  • Pipeline to Practice – Deliver workforce enabling products and services.
  • International – Grow global reach, recognition and revenue via strategic collaborations.
  • Partnerships and Trusted Voice – Cultivate aligned, high-trust relationships with sector stakeholders.
  • Trusted Voice – Amplify the Council’s presence and influence in health and workforce discourse.
  • Enabled for Success – Build internal capabilities and operational excellence to underpin delivery.

“This is about more than responding and adapting—it’s about leading,” Associate Professor Reynolds affirmed. “We are building an innovative and future focused organisation that can withstand uncertainty and positively influence the future of physiotherapy, both here and overseas.”

The strategy will guide the Council’s direction and decision-making from 2025 to 2030, with implementation already underway.
