As the Council prepares to launch the Australian Physiotherapy Entry Pathway (APEP) on 1 October, Deputy CEO Dr Tamsin Garrod shares our vision for the newest assessment pathway for overseas qualified physiotherapists.

‘The Council’s focus on innovation and developing contemporary assessment models, reflect a strong commitment to responding and addressing Australia’s healthcare workforce challenges,’ said Tamsin.

APEP is the Council’s latest assessment model, combining the flexibility of remote assessments with the rigour of in-person hands on training and assessment.

Candidates worldwide, including those in India, Pakistan, the Philippines, and Brazil, can complete 80% of the entry pathway online from any location.

During the development of APEP, the Council actively garnered comprehensive and nuanced insights from experienced physiotherapists to ensure that the assessment was both relevant and meaningful to joining the physiotherapy profession. Their expertise helped us build the pathway, ensuring it remains relevant, rigorous, and aligned with best practice.

Tamsin reflected on the Council’s confidence that APEP will increase accessibility to candidates, reduce travel costs, improve their journey into the Australian healthcare workforce, while upholding the expected safety and quality of new physiotherapy entrants.

‘Ultimately, our purpose and priority are to ensure the safety and effectiveness of physiotherapists serving the Australian community, and to guarantee that Australians have equitable access to the vital care of physiotherapists.’
